Finally the knife is near

Well after so many weeks of sitting and waiting and wondering what the future of my shoulder would be I finally have a date for my operation: 2nd September. Now that I know that I am getting all scared and worried. Anyway there is always something new to learn from new experiences and this is the way I am looking at this as a life-long learner. So knife knife here it comes...

Despues de tanto incierto con el tema del hombro finalmente me dieron fecha para la operacion el 2 de Septiembre....esta tan cerca...dios que miedo que me da!!! Pero bueno peor seria tener que vivir asi con esta discapacidad que tengo ahora que no puedo ni vestirme bien! Asique me lo tomo como un proceso de aprendizaje. Algo siempre se aprende de experiencias nuevas no? El sabado me hice un analisis de sangre y el jueves veo al medico de vuelta.

Ayer tuve una fiesta del colegio (el colegio cumplio 40 anos como yo) y se hizo una cena baile. Dios mio, que desperate housewives que son algunas madres...en pedo, con minifalda y bailando. Ay que risa...yo baile con el director un rock and roll pero le adverti "Mr. Renshaw cuidado con mi hombro" "Uy, me dijo, cierto" asique baile con el izquierdo. Es la segunda vez que me pongo mis zapatos de taco y brillito. Que risa!

Nice pastry!

Hoy fue un dia cansador, despues de desayunar y banarme fui al colegio porque era "open day" y tenia que ir a hacer acto de presencia. De ahi volvi a casa planche un poco de ropa y nos fuimos a pasear. Comi esta deliciosa factura con berries y crema pastelera. YUMMY. Manana tengo que ir al funeral del padre del director, seguro que va a ser triste.

Last weekend was one of locking myself up and finish assignments. We did managed to go out to shake those rusty brains out a bit, and I took this shot of my favourite road in Camberwell.

So Good

I saw this video on Creativity for the first time at the beginning of the year and emailed it to the curriculum coordinator at my work. She passed it on the the rest of the staff, I am not sure if they watched it, but they should have. It's long (20 minutes) but worth every one of them.

Anton al volante

Despues de un sabado de estudio y encierro, lluvia y mal tiempo, Anton nos llevo a tomar un helado a Macca's. Anton va mejorando de a poco, digamos que lo mas peligroso que hace hasta el momento es olvidarse de chequear su (blind spot) punto ciego??? antes de cambiarse de carril, lo cual es muy peligroso y por eso solo salimos por el momento cuando casi no hay trafico. Hoy fue otro dia mas de encierro y esudio para mi y limpieza para Anton y Ricky. Ya me estoy empezando a poner de la cabeza que no puedo hacer nada con mi hombro asi. El martes tengo que llamar al especialista y poner las cosas en movimiento.

I love "pasta flora". Yesterday I cook one for dessert and today there is only one slice left. Quince jam is awesome!

Should students be active contributors as well as passive ‘absorbers’?

If the main purpose of Web 2.0 technologies is collaboration and communication, then I think it is almost rhetorical to ask this question. As Bronwyn stated in her second blog it is more effective to be an active contributor whilst using this technology. According to E.M Robinson for effective communication to occur the message “... must travel in a two way pattern...” Modern theories of learning also emphasise the idea that learning is a constructive process, where students build relationships and create new connections, which implies an “active” process rather than a passive one (Starko, 2005). Vygotsky also believed that language and socialising played an essential part in learning (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2007). I also believe that Web 2.0 technologies such as Blogger, promotes creativity and goal oriented processes, which offer more prolific opportunities for learning (Starko, 2005).

For example students set up a blog where they can write their weekly journal entries or write an opinion piece (active contributors), provide opportunities for other students to respond to their entry (active contributors), add images, videos or photographs (active contributors), create lists of new spelling words, links to pages they find interesting, adding gadgets such as weather or paintings by their favourite artist (active contributors).

There will be times where students will be on the other end of the computer and won’t be creating the information, or responding to someone else’s information perhaps while"google-ing" for a project. However, I believe we must educate our students to question and to critically, hence ‘actively’ not passively absorb information, especially now when everyone can and does publish on the web.

What are some of the dangers of using Web 2.0 technologies in your classroom?

Web 2.0 can bring a new “modern” world of interaction, communication and collaboration to the classroom. Since these ‘new technologies’ are creeping into our lives and our students’ at a swift rate, we, as teachers, must prepare our students to be literate in the use some of these technologies. Not all of these wonderful (mostly free) tools are appropriate to be used as school, and even the ones that are, can potentially be a risk to the student community.

To minimise this risk I believe that it is the role of the teachers and the school as an organisation to first and foremost instruct our students in using Web 2.0 technologies safely and responsible. But what does it mean? It means that as part of learning to use the internet teachers must develop a “contract” to which students must be bound. This contract must include a clear set of rules such as: visiting “appropriate” sites, appropriate language to communicate via the web, respecting other’s opinions, keeping our confidential details safe, treating others with respect and respecting someone else’s privacy (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2009). Although this “contract” can be broken, like any other behaviour contract, it is at least a pre-emptive measure and we are educating our students in the ‘right way’ to behave online. It is ultimately their choice, their behaviour. It is also very important to let them know that we, as teachers, are there to help if they encounter a problem, or if they do not feel safe for any reason.

Eventually it is our responsibility as teachers to monitor closely what our students do, to do damage control when something happens and to maintain open channels of communication for our students and their parents. I think that we should encourage our students and their parents not to be scared of new technology we only need to be prepared for it.
